How make Easy Crispy Fried Onions Recipe
To begin trim and peel a large yellow onion, slicing it first in half and then into thin slices. Follow the shape of the onion so you get the slices where you can separate them into what will become our Crispy Fried Onions.
Add milk and vinegar to a measuring cup or bowl to create a homemade vegan version of buttermilk. This will help break down and soften the onions, but also give our seasoned breading something to cling to. Soak for at least 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper.
The best way to do this is to remove the onions from the “buttermilk” mixture using your hands, draining any excess. Toss immediately with the flour mixture until all of the onions are coated. I do this all at once and the onions should take up all of that flour mixture.
Now, working in about two to three batches, add the onions to a pan with hot oil. I use medium high heat. Allow to fry, tossing occasionally. Remove when golden brown.
Drain any excess oil on paper towels and if desired, give a sprinkling of salt while there is still a bit of that hot oil on them so it sticks.
