If you have found this site via our sister-site, The Veg Life!, you will know that I am a HUGE fan of coleslaw so I had to recreate one of my favorites in this Vegan KFC Copycat Coleslaw.
What makes KFC’s coleslaw so special I think, is that the cabbage mixture is chopped MUCH finer than you see many slaws. My memory of it also seems to recall it having a bit more liquid. So that is what I was aiming for. The taste…I remember well.
To make an easy job of this task, you simply need to find yourself a big bag of coleslaw mix. This generally has red and green cabbage, sometimes onion, carrots, etc. In batches, I add it to the food processor and give it a few pulses. Do not over process. Keep in mind, the vinegar will somewhat break down and tenderize the cabbage, so you still want a little bite to it.
The dressing consists of vegan sour cream, vegan mayonnaise, white vinegar, grated onion (if your bag of slaw didn’t include onion), sugar, dry (powdered) mustard, celery seeds (I opted for celery salt today), salt (omit if using celery salt) and pepper (I used white pepper to give it a clean look).

Wow, this is really good! I used broccoli slaw from the package, and I didn’t have celery seed or dry mustard so used prepared spicy brown mustard. I also didn’t have regular vinegar so used white wine vinegar, so I cut down sugar to just 1 TBS (white wine vinegar is a little milder so didn’t think I needed all that sugar). It turned out perfectly! I’ve been searching for a regular old cole slaw dressing and this one is finally it! The grated onion makes such a difference! (I only had red onion btw but it is awesome in this recipe.) Thank you!
p.s. I chopped up the broccoli slaw to be even finer per your suggestion–again, what a difference!
Thanks so much for the wonderful comment (and how nice to meet another Aimee 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed the coleslaw and how great that you made broccoli slaw. I just realized, I don’t have a recipe for that yet. Coming soon!!
Seriously awesome recipe. Better than takeout, store bought or any other slaw recipe out there. Better than KFC by far. Thanks for sharing!
Wow! Thanks Christopher 🙂 That just made my day!!!
How many people does this serve?
Hi Jenna, it made about 2 cups but if you click on where I’ve added that in the printable recipe, there is a slider which will allow you to scale up the recipe and it’s ingredients if you wish 🙂
