One of the easiest (and healthiest) snacks you can make is this Classic Chickpea Hummus Recipe. Serve with toasted pita chips or keep it healthy and serve with veggies, such as cucumber slices. We’re making this one by the book. It is truly a classic.
What is traditional hummus made of?
- 15 oz. can of Chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans)
- The liquid from that can of Chickpeas
- Tahini (I love this brand, but any runny tahini will do)
- A good Olive Oil
- Lemon Juice
- Garlic Clove(s)
- Seasonings such Cumin, Salt and Pepper
How to make my Classic Chickpea Hummus Recipe
Before you drain that can of chickpeas, be sure to place a bowl under your strainer because we will be needing that liquid to make our Classic Chickpea Hummus Recipe.
Reserve about 2-1/2 tablespoons of that liquid and add it to a food processor along with the drained chickpeas.
A good runny tahini is next. I used about a quarter cup. Additionally, you’ll want to now add your olive oil, lemon juice, garlic cloves and spices. Pulse until smooth.
It should look like this. If it’s too thick, add more of the chickpea liquid small amounts at a time.
As I mentioned, I am serving mine with cucumbers and I bet you are wondering how I got those decorative stripes on the side 🙂 It’s so easy. I took a zesting tool (the kind that makes strips) and while the cucumber was whole, went along the entire cucumber in long swipes. Continue until the entire cucumber is done and THEN slice. Make it a little more interesting and slice in on the diagonal. This gives more room for the hummus and makes for easier dipping.
Place the hummus in a decorative serving bowl and top with olive oil.
Give it a sprinkling of paprika for color and a bit of chopped parsley for garnish.
That’s it! You are ready to enjoy your Classic Chickpea Hummus Recipe. This recipe doubles extremely well and store any leftovers in the refrigerator not more than a few days.
Isn’t this the prettiest appetizer? I hope you love it as much as I do.
