It’s easier than you think to go cruelty-free, but it can be a bit confusing to sort through all of the information. There are few tips and tricks that make finding out if your favorite beauty brand is truly cruelty-free and vegan.
We know the definition of vegan means that the items contain no animal products or by-products. But let’s delve a bit further into what it means to be “cruelty-free.” According to this excerpt from an article featured on PETA, “Today—because experiments on animals are cruel, expensive, and generally inapplicable to humans—the world’s most forward-thinking scientists have moved on to develop and use methods for studying diseases and testing products that replace animals and are actually relevant to human health.” With such sophisticated options available, why wouldn’t you buy cruelty-free?
There are generally 3 types of cruelty-free brands. Those that are certified by the Leaping Bunny, those that have signed PETA’s pledge, and those that aren’t affiliated with any cruelty-free organization. However, since certification with an organization is completely voluntary, it’s not always crystal clear if that make up brand you know and love is truly cruelty-free.
For a bit of clarity between Leaping Bunny and PETA certification, there is a great resource by Cruelty Free Kitty which breaks it down for you here. I personally love her site because it is updated frequently. You should go check it out!
A good rule of thumb is that if a company claims to be cruelty-free, doesn’t test on animals and doesn’t hire a third party to test on their behalf, they are generally cruelty-free. A big red flag is if the product is sold in China, where third-party testing is required. While there are a plethora of resources to aid you, it also pays to do your own research.
